Nurx Overview: Take Control of Your Reproductive Health

Nurx was founded on the principle of ensuring freedom and accessibility for everyone, regardless of their situation. Their mission is to make STI testing and medication access easy, offering a discreet, speedy, and affordable solution. Nurx offers a variety of STD tests, as well as medications for herpes and migraines, in addition to birth control, all without the need for a doctor’s appointment.

While Nurx doesn’t screen for as many STIs as some other providers, it still offers at-home testing for six common infections, as well as screening for high-risk HPV strains.

If you have a previous herpes diagnosis, you can treat genital and oral infections at home, with a prescription from Nurx – no trip to the pharmacy required. Nurx also offers over 100 types of birth control, with expert advice on choosing the right one for you.

Whatever Nurx service you choose, medical insurance is accepted, which can significantly reduce the cost of STI testing and medication.

Nurx Products and Services: Screen for STIs in the Privacy of Your Home

Birth Control

Nurx provides an extensive selection of birth control methods, such as pills, patches, and injections, both in brand-name and generic forms. After paying the consultation fee, you’ll get a three-month supply. The expense varies depending on your insurance but generally matches prices at typical pharmacies. For those without insurance, Nurx offers options starting at $15 per month.

HPV Screening

Nurx provides an HPV screening test designed to assess your risk for cervical cancer, particularly recommended for individuals aged 30 to 65 with a cervix. Ordering the test is simple; you can do it online, and a kit will be sent to your doorstep for a painless swab. Once you’ve submitted your sample, Nurx’s medical team will examine the results and offer guidance on any necessary next steps. A negative result indicates a low risk, while a positive one suggests a higher risk, prompting further consultation with your doctor.

STI Testing

Nurx provides a range of three home STI test kits: the Full Control Kit, the Healthy V Kit, and the Basics Covered Kit. However, it’s crucial to consider seeking advice from a healthcare professional in-person if you have any uncertainties about which tests are necessary or if you’re experiencing unusual symptoms.

The Full Control Kit is ideal for individuals who haven’t undergone testing in over a year. This comprehensive kit includes testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis C, HIV, and syphilis.

Specifically designed for individuals with vaginas, the Healthy V Kit covers testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and HIV.

The Basics Covered Kit is a comprehensive option suitable for individuals of all genders. It includes testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV.

Emergency Contraception

Nurx offers prescription and nonprescription emergency contraception like Plan B with overnight delivery available. Please be aware that the legality of emergency contraception may vary depending on your state. Nurx also allows you to have emergency contraception on hand in case your regular birth control fails or isn’t available.

HIV PrEP (and consultations)

Nurx offers both Truvada and Descovy, the two FDA-approved brands of PrEP (preexposure prophylaxis) for HIV prevention.  You’ll first get an HIV test kit and after reviewing your results, a Nurx professional will determine if PrEP is suitable for you and provide a 3-month supply of daily pills.

Additional Nurx Tests

Nurx also offers:

  • Headache and migraine medication
  • Acne treatment
  • Covid-19 tests
  • Oral and genital herpes treatment
  • Anti-ageing treatment

High-Risk HPV Screening

Without testing, it’s hard to tell if you have HPV as most women don’t experience symptoms. For some, the virus clears on its own without treatment, while in others, it persists unnoticed. The HPV test from Nurx screens for 14 high-risk strains that can lead to cervical cancer if they aren’t caught early or left untreated. The test determines your risk of cervical cancer and your results will be followed by a medical consultation to discuss the next steps.

Over 100 Types of Birth Control Available

Nurx offers over 100 generic and name brand birth control options without needing to visit a doctor’s office. A team of healthcare providers can help you choose which is the right one for you, whether it be the birth control patch, injection, ring, or pill. There are many affordable options available, and with all of Nurx’s services (except for the Medical Consultation), insurance is accepted.

Reading Your Results

Results are delivered to your secure online account within 7 days of the Nurx lab receiving your samples. Your report is easy to understand, informing you if you have tested ‘positive’ or ‘negative’ for the STIs you have been screened for.

You can trust the accuracy of your results as your samples are processed in CAP-accredited and CLIA-certified labs. If you have tested positive, the medical team will be in touch to discuss the next steps. In most cases of chlamydia and trichomoniasis, Nurx will prescribe antibiotics, and for other positive results, they will direct you to the right care.

If you still have questions after your initial consultation, you can contact the Nurx medical team as much as you want for a year, as covered by your $15 consultation fee.

Nurx Pricing: Lower the Cost With Health Insurance

One of the major advantages of Nurx is that you can use your health insurance to reduce the cost of its at-home STI test kits to just $75. This is excellent value-for-money for panel testing, being cheaper than the cost for panel testing from Everlywell and LetsGetChecked. The high-risk HPV test is just $49 with insurance.

The cost for the herpes medication Valacyclovir is competitive. However, you may not have to pay anything, as if your insurance covers it, Nurx will send the bill directly to your provider.

Birth control may also cost you nothing if it’s covered by your insurance. Plus, you save money on added costs as no appointment is needed and your birth control is shipped to you for free.

Emergency contraception may be cheaper at your local pharmacy, but you do have the convenience of not picking it up off the shelf yourself. The prices vary, but they won’t cost you a penny if they are covered by your insurance. Check with your provider, as you may be subject to co-pays or deductibles.

You will have to pay $15 for a medical consultation to use any of Nurx’s services (even if you don’t get a positive result), but that does include unlimited access to the Nurx medical team for a year.

As well as insurance, Nurx accepts all major credit cards as a source of payment.

Nurx Customer Support: Excellent Knowledge Base, but Customer Support Could Be Better

The Nurx website has an excellent knowledge base with an extensive FAQ section covering any question you might have about birth control, STIs and STI testing, HIV prevention, migraines, and the company itself.

There is also an informative blog, which is full of interesting articles, with insights into infertility, PrEP during pregnancy, birth control, and safer sex. Nurx has also recently launched the College Health Hub, where students can access sex education, advice on birth control, and discreet testing and treatment.

Unfortunately, there is no live chat option, and I found it difficult to find information on how to contact customer support until I found an email address on the Nurx Facebook page. I sent an email inquiry asking to see a sample report. However, even after waiting a few days, I didn’t receive a response, which is disappointing.

If like me, you find that email support could be better, you may have better luck with telephone support, which is available Monday through Friday between 9 am and 5 pm EST.

Empowering Women in Their Sexual Health

Nurx is a viable option for women to test for STIs, receive treatment for herpes, and get birth control, without having to visit a clinic or the doctors. Whatever service you choose, your medication or testing kits are delivered for free in discreet packaging to protect your privacy.

What sets Nurx apart from other STI test providers is that it accepts health insurance as a form of payment. This greatly reduces your out-of-pocket expenses on both STI testing and treatment.

Overall, Nurx is a great choice for women who want to take control of their sexual health, testing for the most common STIs, and providing treatment options. If you’re after a more comprehensive STD check or want a testing kit that is designed specifically for males, Everlywell or LetsGetChecked may be better options for you.

FAQ

How often should I get tested for STIs?

Depending on how sexually active you are, your number of sexual partners, and the type of sexual and the type of sexual activity you engage in, it’s recommended you get tested every 3 to 12 months.

You should be getting tested for the common STIs at least once every 12 months as part of your annual health routine. If you have unprotected sex with a new partner or are unsure of your partner’s STI status, you should be testing every 3 to 6 months.

How accurate is at-home STI testing?

When looking at the accuracy of an STI test, you’re likely to hear references to specificity and sensitivity. Specificity refers to how accurate a test is in determining those negative for the STI, while sensitivity refers to how good a test is at determining those positive for the disease. The average accuracy of STI tests are:

Specificity Sensitivity
Gonorrhea 97% 86%
Chlamydia 97% 86%
HPV 84% 86%
Syphilis 91% 85%
HIV 99-99.9% 92-99%
Herpes 99% 93%

A lower sensitivity rate means the risk of a false negative is higher. Other things that can affect the accuracy of an STI test include:

  • Whether your sample has been corrupted or contaminated
  • How closely the instructions of the at-home kit have been followed
  • How soon after exposure you test, as it can take time for infections to be detectable in your samples.

What are common STI symptoms in women?

The symptoms associated with STI in women include:

  • Blood in the urine or the need to urinate more frequently
  • Pain when urinating
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding or discharge
  • Sores on the vagina, mouth, or rectal area
  • Itching in and around the vagina
  • Swollen and/or sore lymph nodes in the groin and elsewhere
  • Fever

However, you should be aware that it’s common for women to experience no symptoms with several STIs, This makes it all the more important to regularly get checked for STIs.

Can pregnant women get tested for STIs?

Yes, and they absolutely should! Pregnant women are just as likely to catch an STI as any other women. If certain STIs go undetected in pregnant women, they can have serious implications for her unborn baby. STIs can be passed on to a baby either during pregnancy or during birth.

As part of your prenatal care, you’ll be tested for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, and hepatitis B. But, it’s advised that you also get tested for other common STIs, like gonorrhea and trichomoniasis, at least once during pregnancy. If you engage in any high-risk sexual activity during pregnancy, you should get tested, even if you have previously been screened for STIs.

Nurx offers PrEP medication, which is 99% effective in preventing HIV. Around 99% of Nurx’s patients pay nothing for the medication as they accept insurance and work with three main payment assistance programs to help subsidize the cost.

They also offer treatment for migraines and tension headaches from home, with a personalized plan. A headache specialist will evaluate you via online consultation and the appropriate prescription medication is delivered and customized ongoing care is provided.
